 International Economics and Finance Studies (IEF) Highlights

More about the IEF Studies

International Economics and Finance Studies (IEF) is a new study abroad opportunity at UPCES in Prague  primarily for economics, finance, and business students. It enables undergraduate students with structured majors such as economics and business to benefit from studying abroad while remaining on track for graduation.

Located in the heart of Prague, IEF seeks to combine rigorous classes with an unparalleled international experience in one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

IEF is run in conjunction with UPCES, a leading, long-established undergraduate study abroad program in Prague.

Economics, Finance, Public Policy, and Business courses are offered direct enroll through Charles University's Institute of Economic Studies (IES).

IES classrooms offer a unique opportunity to interact with students from around the globe. A typical IES course has as many as 80 students of different nationalities and provides a truly multicultural environment for learning.

Courses aim to deepen your understanding in critical areas of finance and economics. The courses are taught by leading academics and are designed to provide you with a thorough grounding.

IEF students live in program sponsored apartments. Apartments are located throughout the center section of Prague. Students do not just interact with Europeans, but truly live amongst them.

Each semester, IEF students are invited on group trips to Kutna Hora or Karlovy Vary, Cesky Krumlov, Litomerice, and a 3-night trip to Krakow, Poland, depending on the semester. IEF students can also participate in a series of cultural trips within the immediate area of Prague. Czech and other European students are invited on these trips as well. UPCES trips generally take place on Fridays, and IEF students will need permission from the faculty to participate.

 Important Curriculum Details

  1. IEF students directly enroll in one or two economics/business courses at the Institute of Economic Studies (IES) of Charles University. 
  2. Students also choose their remaining courses at the UPCES partner program, with subjects ranging from architecture, art history, and literature to communication, political science, and sociology.
  3. IEF and UPCES students enroll together in a beginner Czech language course. This course spans the entire semester and includes an intensive session during Orientation.
  4. IEF courses meet Monday through Friday. 
  5. IEF students are invited on UPCES program trips; however, they must seek permission from IES faculty to miss class if conflicts exist.
  6. The IEF semester calendar is sometimes a week longer than the UPCES semester, but tuition is the same price. UPCES staff will work with landlords to accommodate IEF students through the full semester.
  7. All IEF courses are intended for economic/business majors at the Junior and Senior level. Some courses require prerequisites. Guidance in course choices assures that students are placed at the correct course level.


IEF offers an economic and business focus with unlimited outlets for learning and personal growth, in and out of the classroom.
